SAIS Annual Awards: 2025 Call for Nominations (EXTENDED)
The CIES Study Abroad and International Students (SAIS) Special Interest Group is pleased to announce its 2025–2026 Call for Award Nominations, recognizing outstanding publications and individuals whose academic work focuses on study abroad and/or international students.
Awards will be conferred in the following four categories during the CIES Annual Conference in March 2026 in San Francisco, USA:
1. Best Article Award
2. Best Book Award
3. Best Dissertation Award
4. Transformative Practitioner Award (new in 2025) — recognizing a professional who has made a transformative impact on study abroad programs, policies, or international student communities.
The 2025–2026 SAIS SIG Awards Committee is committed to recognizing a diverse and inclusive group of recipients, reflecting the breadth of the CIES membership in terms of geography, institutional affiliation, gender, and race/ethnicity.
All CIES members are encouraged to submit nominations. Nominations must be submitted with the prior consent of the nominee and should include a brief explanation of why the nominee is deserving of the award.
Self-nominations are also welcome.

1. Best Article Award nominees must meet the following criteria:
Eligible articles must be published between November 1, 2024, and November 1, 2025.
Articles written by members of the CIES Study Abroad and International Students-SIG will be given preference; however, articles by CIES members who are not members of the SIG, as well as those by non-CIES members, will also be considered. Articles must be published in English in a peer-reviewed journal (print or electronic) recognized by the CER Bibliography.
Nominated articles must focus on study abroad and/or international student issues.
Articles may be conceptual or empirical in nature, from any research paradigm, and should provide a unique contribution to scholarship in the field of international and comparative education. Submissions should demonstrate originality and rigor.
2. Best Book Award nominees must meet the following criteria:
Eligible books must be published between November 1, 2024, and November 1, 2025.
Books authored or edited by members of the CIES Study Abroad and International Students-SIG will be given preference; however, works by CIES members outside the SIG, as well as those by non-CIES members, will also be considered.
Books must be published in English.
Nominated books or edited volumes must focus on study abroad and/or international student issues.
Books may be conceptual or empirical in nature, from any research paradigm, and should provide a unique contribution to scholarship in the field of international and comparative education. Submissions should demonstrate originality and rigor.
The nominee should arrange for the publisher to send copies of the book to each member of the Book Award Subcommittee.
3. Best Dissertation Award nominees must meet the following criteria:
Eligible dissertations must be completed between November 1, 2024, and November 1, 2025. The candidate must have achieved doctoral candidacy status in an Ed.D., D.B.A., or Ph.D. program.
Nominees do not need to be members of CIES or enrolled in a doctoral program specifically affiliated with CIES.
Dissertations must be written in English.
Nominated dissertations must focus on study abroad and/or international student issues.
Dissertations may be conceptual or empirical in nature, from any research paradigm, and should provide a unique contribution to scholarship in the field of international and comparative education. Submissions should demonstrate originality and rigor.
It is preferred that finalists submit a paper based on their dissertation for presentation at an upcoming CIES national or regional conference.
Nominations may be submitted by:
(a) the student
(b) a CIES member
(c) the student’s doctoral committee chair (regardless of CIES membership)
Dissertations submitted to other CIES award categories are ineligible.
4. Transformative Internationalization Practitioner Award nominees must meet the following criteria:
This award recognizes professionals (practitioners, faculty members, administrators, or policy leaders) who have demonstrated a transformative impact on study abroad programs, international student policies, or international student communities.
Eligible contributions may include the creation, leadership, or significant enhancement of programs, policies, practices, or networks that support study abroad and/or international students.
Contributions should demonstrate innovation, inclusivity, sustainability, and measurable outcomes that advance the field of international and comparative education.
Nominees may be based in any country and do not need to be members of CIES; however, contributions that engage the CIES Study Abroad and International Students-SIG community will be given preference.
Nominations should include a brief description of the nominee’s contributions and evidence of their transformative impact (e.g., program evaluations, testimonials, published reports, or data where available).
Self-nominations are welcome.
